There is no direct evidence that Jesus was an Essene. The New Testament never calls Him an Essenes. He may have joined their group of manuscript scholars and scribes called the Essenes. They are cabal. Cabal is a legal and literate scholar of Almighty books, manuscripts, juxtaposition, scribes, and scholarly. A cabalist is a learned scholar who knows logic, judgment, loyalty, pragmatic and state of affairs.
Jesus and Essenes discuss about
- Jesus preached the Kingdom of God
- Saint John and Jesus preach repentance
- The importance of Baptism, which is renewing the spirit
- To live and act in the presence and Spirit of God
- Holiness is Oneness of God
Important facts and figures:
1. Norms of society
- Essene are mainstream exclusive scholars. They take notes of the social conditions and norms of society where socially accepted behavior, can be adapted or not.
2. Purity rules
- Being pure in day-to-day activities is important to reach the goal of holiness. Being pure in heart is the prize of seeing God and Lord God Jesus.
3. Good Attitude is a go go
- Good behavior is good attitude
- Jesus: Invited a wide range of people into God’s kingdom.
What about Saint John?
This is where the discussion becomes more interesting.
John lived in the Judean wilderness, wore simple clothing, ate a simple diet, and practiced baptism. And they could have write books together with Lord God Jesus
The Dead Sea Scrolls and Jesus
The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in 1947 and include biblical manuscripts and writings.
They are important because they show what some Jews were thinking during the exact period when Jesus lived. The scrolls contain themes such as:
- A coming Messiah
- A “new covenant”
- The “sons of God”
- reuniting with Jesus and God connection
- Apocryphal facts and expectations
These themes help us understand the Jewish background of Jesus’ ministry, but they do not prove that Jesus came from the community.
Why do some people claim Jesus was an Essene?
Popular books and documentaries states that:
- Jesus spent His “lost years” with the Essenes and He made manuscripts and Lord Jesus’ writings.
- Essene practices are manuscripts and writings.
- Essenes are Jews who were lost in some parts of the Jewish world.
- Early Christianity was a branch of Essene Judaism.
The mainstream scholarly view
The majority of biblical scholars would say:
- Jesus , a Lord of the Jew, of the Second Temple period, not demonstrably an Essene
- He shared some ideas that were also present among the Essenes because both emerged from the same Jewish world.
- His ministry was more open, public, and inclusive than He accept Essene scholars.
A simple way to remember it
Think of it this way:
- Essenes: a strict Jewish community waiting for God’s dramatic intervention.
- Jesus: a Jewish teacher and Messiah who proclaimed that God’s kingdom was breaking into the world through His ministry, welcoming people from every social class.
